Big Bro Hardwood, Wheaton's Expert Hardwood Flooring Company

Big Bro Hardwood is an owner-operated hardwood flooring company serving Wheaton and the surrounding suburbs. We install, sand, stain, refinish, and repair solid and engineered wood floors, starting around $3 a square foot. In 17+ years we have completed 500+ floors across the area – refinishing original red oak strip floors in Wheaton’s older downtown-adjacent homes, repairing and matching hardwood in postwar ranches and split-levels, and installing engineered wood over concrete slabs in finished lower levels of 1980s and 1990s move-up homes.

The same small crew handles every Wheaton project from the first measurement to the last coat – no rotating subcontractors. We price everything line by line so nothing is hidden, run vacuum-assisted sanders that capture 95% or more of dust, and finish with Bona and Loba products that are kid- and pet-safe once cured. Call or email us and we will have a free estimate to you within 24 hours.

Hardwood Flooring Built for Wheaton Homes

Wheaton's mix of housing eras and the area's humid continental climate shape what every hardwood project actually requires. Here is how we adapt our work by home type and condition:

1

Pre-war and early postwar homes near downtown and Wheaton College: These American Foursquares, Colonial Revivals, and early ranches typically have dimensional lumber joists and original red oak or white oak strip floors underneath decades of finish. In most cases we can sand and refinish rather than replace. For any home built before 1978, we follow EPA Lead RRP protocols – full containment, HEPA vacuuming, and clearance verification.

2

Mid-century ranches and split-levels: These homes often have mixed subfloor conditions, with original plank subfloor in some sections and later plywood additions in others. We check flatness and moisture throughout before we install or refinish anything, and we address low spots so the finished floor stays tight over time.

3

Matching repairs and additions to existing floors: Many Wheaton homes have been remodeled in stages. We source matching species and board width, feather new planks into the existing field, and blend stain so the repair disappears into the surrounding floor.

4

1970s-1990s subdivisions with concrete basement slabs: Finishing a lower level in one of Wheaton’s later subdivisions means starting with a moisture test. Depending on results, we use a floating or glue-down engineered system, never solid wood directly over slab.

5

Year-round humidity swings: Cold, dry winters followed by warm humid summers put real stress on hardwood. We acclimate every shipment on site and recommend keeping indoor humidity between 30-50% to prevent gapping, cupping, and seasonal movement after installation.

In many Wheaton homes the original wood is worth saving rather than replacing - but the only honest way to know is to look at the subfloor and boards up close, which is exactly what we do on every free estimate.

If you want your floors to look awesome, have it done reliably and have very fair pricing, contact BigBroHardwood. We had our floors redone prior to moving in, the former owners didn't take care of the floors at all and now they look brand new!

We hired Donatas to refinish hardwood floors in our 56-year-old Darien house last week and we are very pleased with the results. We dreaded the project because we had to shuffle furniture into other rooms and because of my preconceived notion that the entire house would be covered in sawdust. Well, I have to say it was nowhere near as bad as anticipated! Donatas sealed off adjacent areas and kept the dust down to a minimum, vacuuming up at the end of each day. We were very impressed with his attention to detail and overall work ethic, going out of his way to fix an unexpected issue resulting in a very long day for him. Ours was a week-long project, followed by a five-day curing period and Donatas made it as painless as possible for us. We feel very comfortable giving Big Bro Hardwood and Donatas in particular a five-star review and highly recommend them!

Dan transformed our 50 year old floors. They now shine as if they are brand new! We love the color of stain and the commercial finish he offered. Knowing we have a large dog this was a perfect choice and feel it is a great value. Again we are so happy with the results. Dan was prompt, professional and accommodating.

We would highly recommend Big Bro Hardwood!

We hired Dan after talking to 2 other companies and couldn’t be happier!!
He did a fantastic job, he showed up on time and his price was very reasonable.
He sanded and stained our 2nd story oak floors from golden oak color to a beautiful Jacobean stain. I really wish I had gotten “before & after” pictures. Our floors look absolutely beautiful and unlike the crew who did our 1st floor, Dan was very careful not to get ANY dark stain splatters on our white trim.
His hard work is impeccable and he’s a great credit to his craft!
I highly recommend him.

Couldn’t be happier with the job Big Bro did. The previous owners of our home installed bright red maple (who knows why), and I’ve wanted to change it forever. Maple is hard to work with, and Dan did a beautiful job. He worked with us on breaking up the project into two parts to inconvenience us the least, and was always on time and cleaned up. The project timeline went exactly as expected (a rarity these days). While refinishing floors is a hassle by default, Dan made it as painless as possible. Check out our before and after of one room for the big difference (still needs paint!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you refinish the original oak floors in older Wheaton homes near downtown or the college area?

Yes, and it’s some of our favorite work. Homes in those neighborhoods often have red or white oak strip floors that have never been properly refinished. Because they sit over traditional dimensional joists and plank subfloors, the wood is usually stable and sands beautifully. We use vacuum-assisted equipment to capture 95% or more of dust, then finish with low-VOC Bona or Loba coatings that are safe for kids and pets once cured. Call us for a free estimate within 24 hours.

My Wheaton ranch has a partial basement and a crawlspace section - can you install hardwood throughout?

We run into this often with postwar ranches in Wheaton. Mixed subfloor conditions and crawlspace sections require moisture testing and sometimes leveling before any wood goes down. We check subfloor flatness and moisture readings before we commit to a product or method. Over crawlspace areas, engineered hardwood is usually the right call. We walk you through every option at the free estimate so there are no surprises mid-project.

Does Wheaton's climate cause problems for hardwood floors, and how do you handle it?

It does if humidity isn’t managed. Wheaton winters are cold and dry, summers are warm and humid, and that seasonal swing causes solid hardwood to expand and contract noticeably. Gapping in winter and cupping in summer are both common complaints we hear. We follow NWFA guidelines, acclimate wood on site before installation, and recommend keeping indoor humidity between 30-50% year-round. That single habit prevents most seasonal movement issues.

Our Wheaton home was built in the 1950s - do you take any special precautions before sanding?

We do. Homes built before 1978 can have lead-based paint under old finish layers, including on floors. For any pre-1978 Wheaton home, we follow EPA Lead RRP protocols – proper containment, HEPA filtration, and verification after cleanup. Our crew is trained and equipped for this, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself. It’s a standard part of how we approach older homes in Wheaton and the surrounding area.

How much does a hardwood floor project cost?

It depends mostly on square footage, the condition of the floors, and whether you’re refinishing or installing new. Refinishing starts around $3 per square foot; new installation costs more because of materials. You get an itemized price at the free in-home estimate, and you can get a rough number first with our online cost calculator.

How long does it take, and can we stay in the house during the work?

Most refinishing projects take 2–5 days, depending on size, stain, and number of finish coats. You can usually stay home – we seal off work areas and keep sanding dust to a minimum with vacuum-assisted equipment – but you’ll need to keep off the floors while the finish cures (water-based finishes are walkable sooner than oil-based). We give you a day-by-day plan before we start.

Do you require a deposit, and how does payment work?

For most projects, we take a deposit to cover materials and lock in your dates, with the balance due once the work is finished and you’re happy with it. We put the exact terms in writing at the estimate, so there are no surprises.
