Big Bro Hardwood, Lisle's Expert Hardwood Flooring Company

Big Bro Hardwood is an employee-owned hardwood flooring company serving Lisle and the surrounding suburbs. We install, sand, stain, refinish, and repair solid and engineered wood floors, starting around $3 a square foot. Over 17+ years, we have completed 500+ floors across the area – refinishing original narrow-strip red oak in Lisle’s mid-century ranches and split-levels, matching boards in 1970s two-story colonials, and gluing down engineered plank in the townhomes and condo communities built closer to I-88.

Why Lisle Homeowners Trust Big Bro Hardwood as Their Hardwood Flooring Contractor

Premium Results From $3/sq ft

Beautiful hardwood floors in your Lisle home do not have to come with an inflated price tag. Our work starts at just $3, covering everything from refinishing worn oak to installing new engineered wood. Use our hardwood floor cost calculator to get a quick sense of what your project might run before we even walk through the door.

Floor Condition and Moisture Come First

In Lisle, where basements and seasonal humidity swings are a real factor, we never skip the groundwork. Before any installation or refinishing plan is set, we check subfloor flatness, moisture levels, and existing damage. That upfront inspection is what keeps gaps, cupping, and loose boards from becoming problems down the road.

Dustless Sanding Technology

Our vacuum-assisted sanding equipment captures 95% or more of dust at the source. That means less cleanup for you, better air quality in your home during the project, and a cleaner surface for the finish coats to bond to. It is one of those details that makes a real difference in both the process and the final result.

Free In-Home Estimate Within 24 Hours

We come to your Lisle home, measure the space, look at the actual floor condition, and talk through what you want. Then we put together a free, itemized estimate within 24 hours. You get a scope built around your specific floors, not a rough number pulled from a general price chart.

Complex Projects Planned, Not Improvised

Concrete slabs, crawlspace moisture concerns, stair refinishing, custom stain matching, room-to-room transitions – these take real planning. We map out every step before work begins: materials, sequence, prep requirements, and finish details. That way, fewer decisions are left to figure out mid-project, and the work moves cleanly from start to finish.

80% of Clients Refer Us

Roughly 8 in 10 clients found us through a neighbor, a friend, or a family member who had us work on their floors. We have been at this since 2008, and that kind of word-of-mouth is something we take seriously. It tells us we are doing right by the people who invite us into their homes.

Hardwood Flooring Built for Lisle Homes

Lisle's mix of postwar ranches, split-levels, and newer townhomes - combined with its humid summers and dry heating seasons - means what works on one floor may not work on the next. Here is how we adapt our approach by home type and condition.

1

Mid-Century Ranches and Split-Levels

Many Lisle homes built in the 1950s and 1960s have narrow-strip red oak over plywood subfloor on the main level. That original wood is often thick enough to sand and refinish two or three more times. For any home built before 1978, we follow EPA Lead RRP protocols – containment, HEPA vacuuming, and clearance verification – before we touch a thing.

2

Additions and Rehabs

When a room addition meets original flooring, matching the species, width, and stain is a real craft challenge. We blend new boards into the existing floor and sand everything as one surface so the seam disappears rather than announces itself.

3

Newer Subdivisions and Infill Homes

Homes built in the 1980s through 2000s around the Morton Arboretum area and near I-88 typically have OSB subfloors. We check for flatness and moisture before any installation and often recommend wide-plank engineered or prefinished hardwood for a stable, long-lasting result.

4

Townhomes and Condos on Concrete

Many Lisle townhome and condo communities from the 1980s onward sit on concrete slabs or podium structures. We moisture-test the slab first, then glue down or float engineered hardwood using low-VOC adhesives – and we work around HOA scheduling requirements from the start.

5

Seasonal Humidity Swings

Lisle’s climate swings from hot, humid summers to cold, dry winters. We acclimate every board on site before installation and advise keeping indoor humidity between 30-50% year-round. That one habit prevents most of the cupping, gapping, and squeaking we get called in to fix.

In many Lisle homes the original wood is worth saving rather than replacing - the only way to know is to look at the subfloor and boards up close.

Before & After: See a Recent Lisle Refinishing Project

This one speaks for itself. A homeowner in Lisle reached out about the original hardwood floors in their mid-century ranch - boards that had taken decades of foot traffic and were left worn, scratched, and dull. No replacement needed. We sanded them back to bare wood, repaired the damage, and refinished them from scratch. Take a look at the before and after photos below and judge the results for yourself.

We hired Donatas to refinish hardwood floors in our 56-year-old Darien house last week and we are very pleased with the results. We dreaded the project because we had to shuffle furniture into other rooms and because of my preconceived notion that the entire house would be covered in sawdust. Well, I have to say it was nowhere near as bad as anticipated! Donatas sealed off adjacent areas and kept the dust down to a minimum, vacuuming up at the end of each day. We were very impressed with his attention to detail and overall work ethic, going out of his way to fix an unexpected issue resulting in a very long day for him. Ours was a week-long project, followed by a five-day curing period and Donatas made it as painless as possible for us. We feel very comfortable giving Big Bro Hardwood and Donatas in particular a five-star review and highly recommend them!

Dan transformed our 50 year old floors. They now shine as if they are brand new! We love the color of stain and the commercial finish he offered. Knowing we have a large dog this was a perfect choice and feel it is a great value. Again we are so happy with the results. Dan was prompt, professional and accommodating.

We would highly recommend Big Bro Hardwood!

We hired Dan after talking to 2 other companies and couldn’t be happier!!
He did a fantastic job, he showed up on time and his price was very reasonable.
He sanded and stained our 2nd story oak floors from golden oak color to a beautiful Jacobean stain. I really wish I had gotten “before & after” pictures. Our floors look absolutely beautiful and unlike the crew who did our 1st floor, Dan was very careful not to get ANY dark stain splatters on our white trim.
His hard work is impeccable and he’s a great credit to his craft!
I highly recommend him.

Couldn’t be happier with the job Big Bro did. The previous owners of our home installed bright red maple (who knows why), and I’ve wanted to change it forever. Maple is hard to work with, and Dan did a beautiful job. He worked with us on breaking up the project into two parts to inconvenience us the least, and was always on time and cleaned up. The project timeline went exactly as expected (a rarity these days). While refinishing floors is a hassle by default, Dan made it as painless as possible. Check out our before and after of one room for the big difference (still needs paint!)

Frequently Asked Questions

My Lisle home was built in the 1960s. Will the original hardwood floors be worth refinishing?

Most likely, yes. Mid-century ranch and split-level homes in Lisle were commonly finished with narrow-strip red oak over plywood subfloor, and that wood holds up well over decades. We check board thickness, look for previous sanding, and assess any damage before recommending anything. If there is enough material left, refinishing is almost always the better value over replacement, and the results can be genuinely impressive.

Lisle gets cold winters and humid summers. How does that affect hardwood floors?

It matters a lot. The seasonal swing between dry winter heat and humid summer air causes wood to contract and expand. We always acclimate new flooring on site before installation and recommend keeping indoor humidity between 30-50% year-round. That range protects against gapping in winter and cupping in summer. A simple whole-home humidistat makes a real difference for floors in Lisle homes.

I have a townhome near the I-88 corridor. Can hardwood go over a concrete subfloor?

Yes, with the right approach. Many Lisle townhomes and condos from the 1980s and 1990s sit on concrete slabs or podium structures. We always test for moisture before any installation. Engineered hardwood glued or floated over concrete is typically the best fit for those assemblies. We follow NWFA guidelines on moisture barriers and adhesive selection so the floor performs the way it should long-term.

My older Lisle home has a crawlspace under part of the first floor. Is that a problem?

It can be if moisture is present. Crawlspaces in this area sometimes have limited access and humidity issues that work their way up into the subfloor. Before we install anything over a first-floor assembly with a crawlspace below, we check subfloor flatness and moisture readings carefully. If there is a concern, we will tell you honestly and talk through the right solution rather than just proceed.

What does hardwood floor refinishing cost in Lisle, and how do I get a ballpark?

Refinishing starts at $3 per square foot, and we offer a flat rate for homes under 1,200 square feet. The final number depends on floor condition, square footage, stain choice, and finish coats. Our cost calculator gives you a quick estimate online. For anything more specific, we offer a free in-home estimate within 24 hours so you know exactly what to expect before committing to anything.

How do I know whether to refinish my floors or replace them entirely?

We look at board thickness, the depth of scratches or stains, and whether the wood has been sanded multiple times already. If the floors have good material left and no structural problems, refinishing saves money and keeps the character of the original wood. Replacement makes more sense when boards are too thin, severely damaged, or when a homeowner wants a completely different species or width. We give you an honest read either way.

Do your sanders make a mess? Will my house be covered in dust?

We use vacuum-assisted sanding equipment that captures 95% or more of dust at the source. It is not completely dust-free, but it is far cleaner than traditional open sanding. We also contain the work area to protect the rest of your home. Most Lisle clients are genuinely surprised by how little cleanup there is afterward. We take the same care with your home that we would with our own.

Are your finishes safe for kids and pets once they dry?

Yes. We primarily use Bona and Loba finishes, both low-VOC products that are safe for kids and pets once fully cured. We will give you a clear timeline for light foot traffic and full cure before you bring furniture back or let pets roam freely. Curing time varies by product and conditions, but we never leave you guessing. We walk you through exactly what to expect before we pack up and leave.
