Big Bro Hardwood is an owner-operated hardwood floor repair company serving Wheaton, IL. Most of what we do is save floors that do not need replacing: a long-standing squeak, boards cupped or stained from water, gaps that open up every dry winter, or scratches and worn spots that make a good floor look past its prime. We do this work within a larger project, usually hardwood floor refinishing in Wheaton, new flooring installation, or stair work.
Wheaton’s mix of post-war ranches, split-levels, and older homes near downtown means there is usually a real cause behind the damage. A slow leak from an aging supply line, a basement humidity problem working its way up, or forced-air heat pulling narrow-strip oak apart every season. We find the cause first, fix it, and then match the repair to your existing wooden floor so it blends in rather than stands out. If the floor is worth saving, we will tell you honestly, and we will not push a full replacement you do not need. Free in-home estimate within 24 hours across Wheaton and nearby suburbs.

Repairs Done Within a Full Project, Dust-Controlled*
* Timeline depends on repair scope and access; dust control minimizes, but doesn’t eliminate debris or odors. Moving furniture may be required for safe repairs.
Hardwood floors don’t need to be torn out the moment they show wear. In many Wheaton homes, the smarter move is targeted hardwood floor repair: fix damaged areas, stabilize movement, and restore the surface where it matters, without sacrificing quality or the natural beauty of your wood floors.
At Big Bro Hardwood, our hardwood flooring repair services focus on practical solutions first. We inspect your floor’s condition, explain what’s realistic to match, and recommend repair only when the floor truly needs it.
Our floor repair process is built for consistent results, clean work areas, and a scheduled project you can actually plan around. We start by understanding the floor’s condition, then choose the simplest fix that protects your hardwood floors and wood floors long-term.
Timeline at a glance:
Repairs within a refinish (1 room)Multiple damaged areas / board work1. On-Site Inspection + Damage Assessment
We measure the work area, check the floor’s condition, and identify the cause of the problem—loose boards, squeaks, large cracks, gaps, deep scratches, cupping, or water damage. We’ll also look at existing floors and nearby sections to understand what we can realistically match.
2. Protect the Home + Dust Control Setup
Before any cutting, fastening, or sanding, we protect nearby surfaces and set up containment. dustless sanding and dust control minimize debris, but don’t eliminate it completely—especially along edges and tight spots. We also confirm access and moving furniture needs so the job stays safe and efficient.
3. Professional Hardwood Repair Work
We address the “why,” not just the symptom: re-secure loose boards, reduce movement that causes squeaks, and correct issues that can turn into structural issues if ignored. This is where a lot of hardwood repair wins happen.
4. Board Replacement + Patch Work (As Needed)
For broken boards, soft spots, or impact damage, we replace boards or patch sections in a way that blends with surrounding hardwood floors. We’ll confirm wood types and sizing so the repair doesn’t look like a random “new plank” stuck in the middle.
5. Blend the Surface: Spot Sanding + Finish (If Needed)
When a repair touches the surface layer, we may do spot sanding and blend the finish so the repaired area looks consistent. If a repair reveals bigger wear patterns, we’ll explain when broader services make sense, but the default is repair-first.
6. Final Walkthrough + Care Tips
We review the result together, confirm what to expect over time, and give practical care tips to protect your floors and prevent repeat damage. You’ll also get straight expert advice on what to watch for and when to call us back.
Pricing for hardwood floor repair depends on the floor’s condition, the size of the damaged areas, and the wood types involved. Some floor repairs are quick and localized; others involve board replacement, water damage work, or stabilizing movement to avoid structural issues. We take on repairs as part of a refinishing, installation, or stair project rather than as a standalone visit, and projects start at $1,500. The prices below show what repair work typically adds to that project.
During your on-site visit, we’ll review your flooring needs, explain options, and give clear, itemized pricing, often avoiding full replacement when your hardwood floors and wood floors can be saved. You can use our hardwood floor repair cost estimator for a rough idea about the price.

Picking the right hardwood floor repair contractor in Wheaton matters more than most people expect. Good repair work starts with an honest look at what caused the damage, not just what is visible on the surface. We keep the scope tight, explain what we find, and do the work carefully so your floor holds up long after we leave.
A squeak is a symptom, not the whole problem. The actual cause might be a loose board, a failed fastener, a gap between the hardwood and subfloor, or worn framing below. We, a team of hardwood floor repair specialists, look at the affected area and figure out what is actually moving before we touch anything. The fix is aimed at stopping the movement at its origin, not just muffling the sound temporarily while the underlying issue continues to wear on your floor.
About 80 percent of our work across Wheaton and nearby suburbs comes from referrals. That is not something we take lightly. It tells us that people are comfortable putting their name behind the work we did in their home. When you call us, you get a real owner-operated crew that shows up on time, works carefully, and gives you a straight answer about what your floor needs, whether that is a small patch or something more involved.
Some problems only become clear once a damaged board comes up. Staining that has soaked into the subfloor, deterioration spreading to boards alongside the visible damage, or soft spots that were not obvious from the surface can all change the picture. We flag those possibilities with you before work begins, and if we find something unexpected mid-repair, we stop and explain it. No scope changes happen without your understanding of what was found and what your options are.
Wheaton’s mix of older mid-century homes and more recent townhomes and condos means the reasons behind floor damage vary quite a bit. Seasonal humidity swings, slow leaks near exterior walls, subfloor movement, and simple wear all look different once you know what to check. We look at the actual root cause before recommending any repair, because a patch applied over an unresolved problem is likely to fail again. The plan you get is based on what is really going on, not just what is visible from above.
We are honest about when a floor can be saved and when it cannot. Most of the time, targeted repair work is the right call, and we are not going to steer you toward a full replacement you do not need. That might mean stabilizing a section of loose boards, blending a patch into aged strip flooring, or addressing deep scratches and worn spots in specific areas. We keep the project to what actually needs doing and do not expand the scope just to expand the invoice.
Cupped boards, dark staining, soft spots, and swollen sections can all point to a moisture problem, active or past. In Wheaton homes, that often traces back to basement humidity, drainage issues, or a slow leak near a bathroom or exterior wall. Replacing damaged boards before the source is resolved and the floor has stabilized is a repair that tends to fail. We explain when to wait and why, so the work we do actually lasts instead of repeating the same cycle six months later.

contact big bro hardwoodWhen something looks wrong with a hardwood floor, it is hard to know right away whether you are dealing with a simple fix or something deeper. Most of the time, the floor is worth saving. Here is what we see most often in Wheaton homes:
Not sure whether your floor is worth repairing or needs to be replaced? That is exactly what the free estimate is for. We look at the actual condition, give you a straight answer, and will not push a full replacement when a targeted repair will do the job.
Big Bro Hardwood was an absolute pleasure to work with. BBH refinished our floors, installed new stairs and installed new flooring in our basement. They repaired a few areas as well. The end result is outstanding. I highly recommend. Thank you!Read more
Red oak strip flooring from that era is one of the more matchable species we work with, so the answer is usually yes. The challenge is the width and the aged finish, not the wood itself. We source the closest available profile and, when needed, borrow boards from inside a closet or under a radiator cover so the visible floor stays consistent. The patch blends well in most cases, though an aged amber tone may not be a perfect invisible match. We are honest about that upfront.
In Wheaton homes it is almost always a moisture problem first. Snowmelt, freeze-thaw cycles, and gutter or foundation drainage issues push moisture into basements and crawl spaces, and wood floors near exterior walls or below windows respond by cupping. We look at the source before we touch the floor. Once moisture is controlled and the wood dries, mild cupping often flattens on its own. Boards that stay deformed after drying can be re-secured or replaced. Fixing the cause is the only repair that actually holds.
Yes, and that is usually the right call. Engineered floors in condos are commonly a floating installation, so individual boards can sometimes be replaced without disturbing the whole floor. Surface scratches on engineered oak often buff out or take a spot finish well, depending on the wear layer thickness. Gaps from seasonal humidity swings are common in Wheaton condo buildings and do not always need filling. We assess what is actually happening before recommending anything, and we respect association rules around noise and underlayment.
Squeaks in mid-century split-levels usually come from movement between the hardwood and the subfloor, or between subfloor layers that have shifted over decades. Forced-air heating in Wheaton homes dries the interior air in winter, which causes wood to shrink and fasteners to loosen slightly. We find the exact point of movement and re-secure it at the source rather than masking it from the top. We fix squeaks as part of a refinishing or installation project, where the work usually adds only a few hours. The fix is quiet and permanent when the cause is addressed properly.
We look at how much of the floor is actually affected, whether the subfloor is sound, and whether the damage is cosmetic or structural. A few cupped boards, a water stain, or a cluster of deep scratches rarely justify tearing out the whole floor. We do not push replacements you do not need. If the majority of floorboards are structurally solid and the finish still has life, repair is almost always the smarter investment. Use our cost calculator to get a rough sense of what your repair might cost before we visit.
We do repairs within a refinishing or installation project, and most localized work, swapping a few boards, filling scratches, or fixing a squeak, adds a few hours to about a day. If the repair leads into spot sanding and finish blending, plan for one to two days. Water damage jobs add drying time before we can sand or finish, so those take longer depending on how wet the subfloor got. We give you a realistic timeline at the free estimate so you can plan around it. Larger repairs can sometimes be phased to keep part of the floor usable.
The source has to be fixed and the area dried before anything else happens. If water reached the subfloor, we address that first. Once the wood is dry, we assess which boards are swollen, stained, or structurally compromised and replace only what needs to go. Then we match the species, width, and finish to the surrounding floor as closely as possible. Water damage repairs in Wheaton homes are priced as part of the refinishing or installation project, and projects start at $1,500. The cost table on this page shows what water damage work typically adds, depending on how far the moisture traveled. We walk you through every step at the free estimate.
For the rooms the project covers, yes. Patching a few boards or fixing a squeak is done as part of a larger refinishing or installation project, and we can talk through a phased approach if moving everything at once is not practical. We keep the work area contained and use dust-controlled sanding where spot sanding and finish blending are involved.
