Stains/finishes

Hardwood floor staining lets you change or refresh the color of your wood floors after sanding. The final look depends on the wood species, sanding quality, stain color, finish type, sheen level, and how the color reacts on your actual floor.

Big Bro Hardwood uses high quality stain and finish materials from trusted manufacturers such as DuraSeal, Bona, and LOBA. We offer a wide range of hardwood floor stain colors and can create custom color combinations by blending multiple shades to match the look you want.

Stain adds color, depth, and grain character to the wood, while finish protects the floor after the color is approved. The finish seals the surface, controls the sheen, affects odor and dry time, and helps the floor stand up to daily wear. Before any stain or finish is applied, the floor must be sanded evenly so the color absorbs properly and the final result looks consistent.

Hardwood Floor Finishes

Stain gives the floor its color. Finish protects that color and seals the wood. After the stain is approved, the finish is applied as the final protective layer over the hardwood.

Big Bro Hardwood uses professional LOW VOC water-based finish systems from Bona, LOBA, and DuraSeal. We moved away from traditional oil-based polyurethane because modern water-based finishes give homeowners a cleaner and more practical result in most homes.

Water-based finishes offer several important benefits:

  • Lower odor: better for occupied homes, condos, and families who want less smell during the project
  • Faster drying: rooms can usually be used sooner than with oil-based polyurethane
  • Clearer color: the finish does not add as much amber or yellow tone to the floor
  • Better for light stains: a good choice for natural, white oak, gray, beige, and custom blended colors
  • Strong protection: professional water-based systems are built for daily foot traffic, pets, furniture, and routine cleaning
  • Lower VOC options: many modern water-based products have lower emissions than older oil-based finishes

For most homes, water-based finishes are a strong choice because they dry faster, have lower odor, and keep the floor color cleaner over time. They work well with natural floors, light stains, brown tones, gray colors, white oak, red oak, and custom stain blends.

The finish also controls the sheen of the floor. Matte and extra matte finishes create a softer, more natural look and hide small scratches better. Satin gives the floor a light glow without looking too shiny. Semi-gloss and gloss reflect more light, but they also show dust, dents, and surface marks more easily.

A good finish should last for years. That is the result we work to achieve with every hardwood floor refinishing project.

LOBA EasyFinish

LOBA EasyFinish is a 1-component water-based finish for hardwood floors. It is a good choice for high-traffic homes and light commercial spaces. We use it for most standard residential projects, including bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and other areas with normal daily traffic.

It gives the floor strong protection, lower odor, and a clean, natural look without the yellowing common with older oil-based polyurethane. EasyFinish is a good choice when the floor needs reliable long-term protection, but does not need the extra heavy-duty performance of a 2-component commercial finish.

Key Benefits

  • Water-based polyurethane acrylic formula
  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Good for high-traffic residential floors
  • Suitable for wood and cork floors
  • Less product waste
  • Excellent build through high solid content
  • Easy application with no foaming or lap marks
  • Non-yellowing
  • 90% cured after 24 hours
  • Recoat is possible after 2 to 3 hours
  • Fully cured after 5 days
  • Available in gloss, semi-gloss, satin, and extra matte
  • VOC compliant

LOBA 2K Duo

LOBA 2K Duo is a 2-component water-based polyurethane finish for hardwood and cork floors. It is used when the floor needs stronger protection than a standard residential finish. This finish is a good choice for busy homes, kitchens, hallways, homes with pets, rental properties, offices, restaurants, commercial spaces, and other high-traffic areas. It offers strong wear resistance, chemical resistance, scratch and scuff resistance, and slip resistance.

Key Benefits

  • 2-component water-based polyurethane formula
  • Extreme wear resistance
  • Excellent build through high solid content
  • Slip resistance rating R9 under DIN EN 16165:2021-12
  • Non-yellowing
  • Strong scratch and scuff resistance

Color Match Process

Choosing a stain color from a chart is not enough. The same stain can look different on red oak, white oak, maple, old floors, new boards, and floors that were sanded before.

Our color match process is simple:

  1. Test area sanding. The floor is sanded to clean wood so the stain sample shows a realistic color.
  2. Wood species check. Red oak, white oak, maple, and other woods absorb stain differently.
  3. Samples on your actual floor. Stain samples are applied directly on the floor, not just shown on a separate board.
  4. Color adjustment. One stain color can be used, or several shades can be blended for a closer match.
  5. Final approval. The full floor is not stained until the color sample is approved.
  6. Full stain application. After approval, the stain is applied evenly across the floor using the same process as the sample.

After Stain and Finish Care

After the stain and finish are applied, the floor needs time to dry and cure. Dry time means when you can carefully walk on the floor. Cure time means when the finish becomes stronger and ready for normal use.

General aftercare rules:

  • Do not walk on the floor too early. Follow the timing we give you after the final coat.
  • Use socks only at first. No shoes, bare feet, or dirty socks during the early drying period.
  • Keep pets off the floor. Pet nails can damage fresh finish before it cures.
  • Wait before moving furniture back. Light furniture can usually return first. Heavy furniture needs more time.
  • Do not drag furniture. Lift and place furniture. Use felt pads under chair legs, tables, and sofas.
  • Wait before putting rugs back. Rugs can trap moisture and slow the curing process. Put them back only after the finish has had enough time to cure.
  • Avoid wet cleaning. Do not mop the floor right away. Use only the cleaning method we recommend.
  • Keep the home ventilated. Good airflow helps the finish dry properly.

Exact dry timing depends on the finish system, number of coats, humidity, temperature, and airflow in the home. We will tell you when you can walk on the floor, move furniture back, and return to normal use.
